One of the main reasons I write about sports for a living is because I don’t play sports for a living.

But I do have something to brag about.

Gonzaga senior pitcher A.J. Proszek was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 38th round of the Major League Baseball draft today.

Proszek has been a standout pitcher for the Bulldogs and was dominate on the mound during his days with Chewelah, the high school he played for.

And I hit a double off him.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in my senior year at Deer Park High outside of Spokane, Wash. Proszek was a sophomore at Chewelah.

He threw me a first-pitch, belt-high fastball and I crushed it to center field. It hit the base of the wall and I trotted into second base standing up. You could even say that it was a near home run.

It’s unlikely Proszek will ever make a big league roster, but if he does, and I see him on my TV one day, I’m telling this story to everyone within shouting distance.
