Toot, toot!

That’s the sound of me tooting the horn for the Lebanon Express.

We earned nine awards this year in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. Last year, we earned almost half of that, five awards.

Rachel Beck, former sports reporter, swept the sports story category. That’s a first, second, and third for three separate stellar stories. She also took first for best news photo, and a second for best spot news coverage on the Pregnancy Alternatives Center rebuilding after the fire. Rachel now writes for the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Larry Coonrod, education reporter, took home first for a four-part series on the contract buy-out of former superintendent Jim Robinson. Larry is now the editor of the South Lincoln County News.

Robin Camp, former photographer, took first for best sports photo for a men’s soccer photo. (This entry is incorrectly labeled as Rachel’s award, we noticed.) He also took third for best feature photo.

And I took a second-place in the best writing category.
