NFL picks: Week 3 Comments

Last week: 9-7 (21-11 overall)

There were seven games decided by five or less points last week and unfortunately I was wrong on four of them.

Oh well. Can’t win them all. And at least my overall record still looks good at 21-11.

I think the most impressive team after the second week of the season is the New Orleans Saints. Everybody knew they had a good offense, but there aren’t many teams that can match their 45 points in the first week and 48 points last week.

They look a lot like the Arizona Cardinals of last year, a team whose offense was good enough to carry them all the way to the Super Bowl.

But then again, it’s early in the season, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let us focus on the third week for now.

Sunday

Packers at Rams: The Packers are the easy pick here, but I have a weird feeling about this one. I think St. Louis will play drastically better than they have the past two weeks, especially considering it’s the Rams first home game. I’ll still take Green Bay, but I think the Rams will be competitive and they’ll probably lose in heartbreaking fashion.

49ers at Vikings: San Francisco has looked good the past two weeks, beating the Cardinals and the Seahawks. On the other hand, Minnesota has played two terrible teams in the Lions and the Browns. Look for a good game here. I’ll take the Vikings at home.

Falcons at Patriots: Another good game here. New England has proved that it’s not as scary as it was two years ago. That being said, I still like them against Atlanta, but really, it could go either way.

Titans at Jets: New York has proved they have a good defense and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez seems to be doing an adequate job of managing the offense. I’ll go with the Jets.

Chiefs at Eagles: Kansas City is sub-par. I’m on record saying that Matt Cassel is a joke. I’m sticking by that. Philadelphia (no matter who is playing quarterback) should hammer the Chiefs.

Giants at Buccaneers: New York is one of two teams I’m going to pick until they lose. They just seem to find ways to win games. They should beat a mediocre Tampa Bay team.

Browns at Ravens: Cleveland can’t do much offensively (or defensively for that matter) and Baltimore looks good. I’ll take the Ravens.

Jaguars at Texans: I don’t know what to make of Houston. They play terribly in week one at home and then beat a good Tennessee team on the road in week two. Which team shows up? I say the good one. Texans will win.

Redskins at Lions: It’s time. It is. It just is. Lions will win.

Bears at Seahawks: This one looks pretty even to me. Chicago played better against Pittsburgh in week two and Seattle may be without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. But Seattle at home is always a good pick. I’ll take the ‘Hawks.

Saints at Bills: Along with the New York Giants, I’m going to pick New Orleans until they lose. That Saints offense is ridiculous and I don’t think anything will change against Buffalo. The Saints are the pick.

Steelers at Bengals: This is another one where I’m tempted to take the underdogs, especially at home. I think Cincinatti’s offense is going to be good. But Pittsburgh is too tough. I’ll take the Steelers.

Dolphins at Chargers: I’ve noticed that San Diego always plays down to the level of its competition. It’s something that has plagued the Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball team for years, but that’s an entirely different story. I’ll take San Diego at home in this one, but I’d expect a close game.

Broncos at Raiders: Denver is 2-0? Really? They’re not good. I’ll take Oakland, especially at home.

Colts at Cardinals: I’m looking forward to this game. You have to love Indy at Arizona in prime time. Although those NBC Sunday Night Football guys are incredibly annoying and awkward. This one is kind of a toss up. I’ll go with the Colts.

Monday

Panthers at Cowboys: There’s no way Dallas can lose two games in a row in it’s brand-new, billion-dollar stadium, is there? I’ll say no and go with Dallas.

I’m hoping for better than 9-7 this week, but really, I’ll take anything over .500. There are some really good games this week. Good stuff.
