NFL Picks: Week 5 Comments

Last week: 10-4 (43-19 overall)

A new addition to the list of things/people I don’t like: Lumber truck drivers who knock over power poles on a Monday afternoon.

That’s just what happened this past Monday as we were putting together Wednesday’s Lebanon Express. I was ahead of schedule with my work with the idea that I would get out early and watch the much-anticipated Vikings-Packers game.

Didn’t happen. Michelle, A.K. and I packed up and went to Albany to lay out the paper.

So the bad news is, this truck driver caused me to miss one of the best games of the season. The good news is, I correctly picked the winner – Minnesota.

And I correctly picked 10 of the 14 games.

Here’s week five:

Sunday

Vikings at Rams: I watched most of St. Louis’ game against San Francisco. The Rams just didn’t look good. I do think Steven Jackson is one of the best players in the NFL, but he is really their only option. I’m going with the Vikings in this one.

Raiders at Giants: I don’t even feel like I need to justify my pick here. Giants by a ton.

Buccaneers at Eagles: Coming off a bye week, I think Philadelphia should make quick work of Tampa Bay. Eagles will win.

Redskins at Panthers: This is a terrible, terrible game. I’m going to give an edge to the winless Panthers here because they’re at home and they’re coming off a bye. Carolina is the pick.

Bengals at Ravens: Cincinnati is 3-1. They’ve played well to open the season. But they can’t beat Baltimore. Especially not in Baltimore. I’ll take the Ravens.

Browns at Bills. Another horrendous game, although I think Cleveland is much better off with Oregon State alum Derek Anderson at quarterback. He throws the ball downfield more and lets his receivers make plays. Although the Browns did just trade their best receiver, Braylon Edwards, to the Jets. Give me the Bills because of the home-field advantage.

Steelers at Lions: This one should be pretty one-sided. Pittsburgh should handle Detriot rather easily.

Cowboys at Chiefs: There are two ways to justify a Kansas City win in this one. First, Dallas is just way too inconsistent. You really have no idea how they’re going to play from week to week. Second, the Chiefs have one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL. That being said, Kansas City is 0-4 and I don’t think this is their week. Give me the Cowboys.

Falcons at 49ers: Game of the week? Either that or Patriots vs. Dolphins. I think San Francisco is a solid team. I had my doubts early in the season, but I’ll give them the credit they deserve. But Atlanta is coming off a bye. I’ll make this my upset pick of the week. I’ll take the Falcons.

Jaguars at Seahawks: Even if Hasselbeck doesn’t play again, I think Seattle will figure it out at home. Seattle is the pick.

Patriots at Broncos: Not even loyal Broncos fans could have predicted a 4-0 start. It’s the shocker of the year so far. But even though they’re at home, I think they’ll lose this one to the Pats. I’ll go with New England.

Texans at Cardinals: Hmm. Not sure what to think about this one. Houston’s offense is starting to turn it on, but Arizona is at home and coming off a bye week. That obviously gives Arizona the advantage, so I’ll give them the nod over the Texans.

Colts at Titans: Almost as shocking as Denver’s undefeated start is Tennessee’s 0-4 start. The Titans should be good. But so far, they’re just not finishing games, and in the case of last week, not showing up to play. I have to go with Indy in this one. The Colts look really, really good.

Monday

Jets at Dolphins: Honestly, not that interesting of a Monday Night game for me. Not too excited about it. I’ll take the Jets.
